Back at the Station
back to photos' home / zurück zur Photo-Übersicht
This years holidays will be rather short !-(
Going to a business meeting in Erfurt, I interrupted my travel first for a half day
in Magdeburg, and on the trip back in Weimar.
It's a shame that this was my first stay at these places. Both are really great,
but of course Weimar is a little bit greater!
I really intend to spend there a whole week or more. -- Some days ...
I did not make ANY photo in Magdeburg, and I'm very proud of it!
There are too many photos in the web, everyone makes some, no one
looks at them ...
And I wanted to SEE and LIVE and FEEL, not only thinking formally, of
perspective and light and composition.
And to SMELL. And NOT to care. And just REMEMBER.
So there's only my word that it is really worth visiting! You MUST go there.
I surely shall come back soon (inscha'allah) and then I take some photos for you ...
The same in Erfurt, -- we walked through the city twice, but we were three, discussing and thinking, and a group of three won't work well if one is always behind ...
Almost at the end of my stay I started, and I did not took the standard motifs (which are also very worth visiting) but the way home from the station, along the canal "Flutgraben":

This is an installation on the Theaterplatz
(Theatre Place) in Weimar, called "Weimars Wohnzimmer"
(Weimar's living room). It brings drawings of
Henry van de Felde into the public space, in a somehow
irritating way, and is part of the "Weimarer Sommer" (Weimar summer)
festival, which in this year is
dedicated to the 15th birthday of the designer, who was so important
for Thuringa's artistic scene and industry.

It is very funny to see: When you close one eye and find the right view point, the "buildings" made merely of lines become very real and I got a bit of a vertigo seeing the people stepping through the walls without even noticing ...

These automobiles are A PLAGUE!!! They spoil every view! They should
be forbidden here! The drivers don't have ANY RESPECT for cultural heritage.
They don't even know what the word "culture" means !?!?!
I hate them!
It's MONDAY, it's closed, so I walked to the PARK (which I suppose is much nicer on such a lovely day !-)

These are artificial rocks, etc., planned by Goethe as a memorial for a young lady who committed suicide in the Ilm after reading "Werther" !! It seems impossible to drown in this shallow creek, but she managed! She must have been VERY sick of love!

In the Weimar classic epoche, the knowledge of ancient and classical Greek mythology
was always present.
And there was the need of transfering pieces of art between media,
e.g. paintings into coppers, sculptures into literal descriptions,
music into poems, because they didn't have "mechanical" reproduction.
But of course such a transfer is always the creation of a NEW piece
of art, is a reflection on the older work, not a reproduction.
So typically we get a silhouette of the young artist handing out
a poem to his grandfather, desribing the premiere of his symphonie, etc.
Here we have an extreme example:

In the city map this is called "Haus der Frau von Stein". But indeed it was the house of MR. Stein, not of MRS. Stein! But no-one seems to remember HIM !?!? (He was NOT the famous chancellor!)

This is a famous GAP (BAUL_CKE), because here the house had stood were Johann Sebastian Bach had lived for nearly nine years!!!

Having seen enough I wanted to go home ASAP, but on my way to the railway station I passed a small sign in the street leading to an exhibition about the Nazi "Gau-Forum". This is the ensemble of Nazi party buildings they had planned and started just here, were I was standing. Already when passing through this morning I had wondered about these gigantic administration buildings, but I didn't expect THIS. So I decided to take a later train and to visit the exhibition.
My photos show HOW BEAUTIFUL our country would have become if the Nazis had won the war ...
At first: See this beautiful tower! (It is unfinished, so it's not a real tower, but a stump!)

There are these two long buildings on each side of the place, and a big hall at its end. The hall stood there for fifty years half-finished, and now is a shopping mall! If Mr. Sauckel knew ...

Nowadays the Nazu mass assembly "Volkshalle" looks like any other cheap shopping center. Disappointing! I expected some naked heroes by Breker, etc.
